St. Francis Health Foundation, Topeka adds resources from HNC Living Foundation grant

Brummell learned about the grant opportunity during a conference call with other social workers in the Midwest, and she voiced frustration with the lack of resources. Along with relationships Gomez and his wife built at the hospital, they also received practical support. The St. Francis Health Foundation, which Gomez called “an angel on our shoulders,” stepped in to help them financially. A former supervisor at the Kansas Department of Corrections, Gomez was quickly unable to work because of the treatments he needed. Then his insurance ran out.

“They’ve helped us with insurance premiums, prescriptions — made life less stressful for us,” he said.
